Alternatives to Cyclomethicones (D5)

Posted by Chemlink in Personal Care Products, Regulations | 0 comments

Recently there has been concern about the toxicity of the Cyclomethicone D5 (Cylcopentasilicone), which provides a silky, dry feel to skin care formulations. Due to these concerns there has been new opinion published by the SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety) in March 2015.

oil in water

This has proposed some restrictions to the use of D5. In light of this we have put together this list of possible alternatives which may be used should you wish to remove it from your formulations, or develop new formulations that will give the same aesthetic feel.

Silwax D02 (Ethyl Methicone)

This product has been specifically developed by Siltech to replace D5, this is achieved by taking a triglyceride oil (Vegetable oil) and adding as little as 2% Silwax D02. This effectively lowers the surface tension of the vegetable oil mimicking the feel characteristics of D5. This means the Oil/D02 blend can now be used as a cost effective replacement for D5, with none of the health concerns associated with D5.

BergaCare FG5 (Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Ethylhexyl Stearate, Hydrogenated Olive oil Unsaponifiables, Caprylic/Capric Tryglyceride )

BergaCare FG5 is manufactured by Berg & Schmidt solely with a carefully chosen combination of renewable, natural raw materials, to provide a low-viscosity, transparent and odourless liquid. This combination gives BergaCare FG5 a sensorial profile similar to that of Cyclomethicone D5.

Plantasens Olive LD (Hydrogenated Ethylhexyl Olivate, Hydrogenated Olive Oil Unsaponifilables) and Plantasens Olive LD-SP ECO (Coco Caprylate/Caprate, Hydrogenated Olive Oil Unsaponifiables)

Plantasens Olive LD is a natural Olive emollient oil, based on renewable sources and developed by CRM International, which does not contain additives and preservatives. This makes Plantasens Olive LD a light and dry emollient that can be used as a vegetable alternative to silicone. It also possesses moisturising properties, which can restore suppleness and elasticity of the skin.

Plantasens Olive LD-SP ECO is a clear oil developed from renewable and natural sources and combines high performance and preservation of the environment. This provides formulations with a unique natural sensorial agent that can be used as a vegetable alternative to silicone.

Refined Broccoli Seed Oil (Brassica oleracea Oil)

The Refined Broccoli Seed Oil from Bertin, has an exceptional lubricating ability similar to that of silicones and presents a no fatty touch, light, and a fast absorption. Making it an ideal natural alternative for personal care and cosmetic formulations.

Cosmosurf CE Series (Various – Octyldodecyl (Alkyl) Citrate Crosspolymers)

The Cosmosurf CE Series was developed by SurfaTech LLC originally for wet skin sunscreen formulations; whereby if the skin became wet after application, the actives used for the protection of skin against UV radiation would still be protecting the skin. The Cosmosurf CE Series are based on renewable raw materials, some of which carry ECOcert certification, and share many of the attributes associated with the dry, silky feel of D5.

Our technical department here at Chemlink Specialities have developed a range of starting point formulations utilising the above products. To see these formulations, data or request samples, please get in touch with us using the above forms.
